The Star

This is one of the two English publishing newspapers in Amman, Jordan. It’s come every week, on Thursdays.

The star is a weekly English journal published every Thursday in Amman, Jordan. The star and another newspaper Jordan Times are the only two newspapers that publish in English in the Arab kingdom. The star is fully owned by Jordan Press and Publishing co and was first published in 1993. The star is an independent, political, economical and cultural weekly newspaper. Formerly, the star was known as Jerusalem Star first done in 1966 in Jerusalem, its first editor being the late Mahmood Al Sharif. Presently, the star chief editor is Maha El Sherif.

The Jerusalem star used to publish as a tabloid up until 1993 when it changed and up to date it is a broadsheet. It follows the American way of writing and pagination, from spelling to capitalization, from interviews to citations. its readers are said to be 6% Jordan and most them being those who want the news in the English language, this being people in power or resident who can read English. Although it covers other areas, its major coverage tackles political, economical and cultural issues.

The star has made many daring moves; it was the first to interview Israel politicians after the signing of the Palestinian/Jordan-Israel 1993-1994 peace treaty. it was the first to move into Israel to interview other powerful leaders like; Shimon Peres and Benjamin Netanyahu. However it also met criticism from those against the signing of the peace process calling the star 'the enemy allies'. with all this and more the star still stands out in Jordan as give neutrality in terms of politics.
